About Abundant Life Christian Counseling

Hello :)

I'm Avrial Mendoza. While I grew up in the NRV, I lived in other areas of Virginia and the US following graduation from Mid-Atlantic Christian University, returning to live in the NRV in 2016. I completed graduate studies in Counseling at Regent University in 2005 and became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2011. I gave my life to Christ at age 9 and continue to learn everything that means. I am happily married, with 2 dogs. I am passionate about counseling and people's relationship with God. I enjoy cooking, baking, trying to not kill plants, going to the beach (or anywhere near water), and watching my favorite reruns. I enjoy experiencing different cultures in various parts of the world and the US.

Meet the background noises during telehealth: Bonnie & Little

I adopted these sisters in the summer of 2019, with the desire to train them as therapy dogs to be used with me during counseling services. Training stalled during the pandemic, & I've let go of that dream. With the counseling "room" being mostly virtual, Bonnie & Little are left to make cameo appearances on teletherapy. Bonnie is more apt to become restless during the day and nose (push with her nose) me for attention. She may also sometimes insert herself onto my lap during a session! Little makes her presence known through human-like snores (sleep apnea in dogs?) and other embarrassing noises... These two are truly 2 peas in a pod!

I would love to meet any pets you have and welcome them in therapy. There is a good bit of research to show the therapeutic benefits of animals of all kinds! This article from UCLA Health lists in bullet points some of the mental & physical benefits: https://www.uclahealth.org/pac/animal-assisted-therapy

Therapeutic Approach

My approach can vary, depending on what each client needs. I know that talking can be extremely helpful, at times bringing clarity and insight. When you need more or something different, I aim to provide practical strategies and skills. I rely heavily on cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused approaches to focus on thoughts, strengths, and skills to change and grow. For those of faith in Christ and willing to include this in treatment, I aim to integrate your values, spiritual practices, and beliefs. For those of differing faith or without a religious orientation, respect for your values and beliefs is central. I do not try to impose my beliefs on anyone. I do have a sense of humor, and I like to use it, when appropriate. Therapy doesn't always have to be so serious, after all.

Experience

Since 2005, I have worked with teens and adults with substance use, mood problems, behavioral problems, and learning difficulties. I became licensed as a Professional Counselor in Virginia in 2011. I am pursuing certification in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which focuses on helping youth heal from the effects of trauma.
